[Recipe] Readability of glossary objects

Tips to keep the glossary readable: limit hierarchy levels, keep 3 to 20 direct children per group, and set naming rules.

Here are some tips to make navigation easy and improve the readability of glossary objects.

How many levels should you keep?

Limit the number of levels to 4 or 5 between the root and the most detailed level.

How to size your groupings

Aim for between 3 and 20 direct children. Indeed:

  • Fewer than 3 direct children: the number of objects is not optimized. You have to multiply the objects at level N, and an additional click is needed to reach the detailed information.
  • More than 20 direct children: the eye has more difficulty quickly finding and distinguishing the objects it is looking for. With a maximum of 20 children over 5 levels, you can already manage 3.2 million business terms in the glossary.

How to make objects easier to read

To improve the readability of objects, consider setting naming rules on your objects. For example, you can use the case of the object names to make elements stand out.

In the example below, domains are written in uppercase (MARKETING, SALES), universes in title case and business terms in sentence case, so each type of object stands out in the tree.
