Synonyms record the other names a glossary object goes by, so users can find it without knowing its exact wording. You can create them in several places in DataGalaxy, depending on your needs.
Which objects can have synonyms?
You can create synonyms on the following types of glossary objects:
- Universe
- Concept
- Business term
- Indicator
- Domain
- Dimension
Local synonym or synonym link?
According to your needs, you can create:
- A local synonym: lets users associate synonyms with a glossary object without creating a new object, for example to list an acronym, a common word or company jargon.
- A synonym link: links objects of the same type together via a relationship that lets you quickly access the linked object.
How to create synonyms
From the detail tab of the object card
All objects that support synonyms have a synonyms section made up of a table that lists all the synonyms of the object. This section can be hidden via the screen settings (see "Customize the workspace screens").
In this table you can:
- Create synonyms (local or relationships)
- Edit a local synonym
- Delete a local synonym
- Open the overview of an object linked by the synonym link
- Delete a synonym link

From the Linked objects tab of the object card
You can only create synonym links from this tab.
From the linked objects section of the docking panel
You can only create synonym links from this section.

From the tabular view of the glossary
You can create synonym links in bulk if you have a DataSteward license. To do so, see "Bulk-edit objects".
How to use synonyms in search
You can use synonyms in searches to help you find an object without knowing its exact wording, using company jargon or known synonyms of the object.
