How to connect DataGalaxy MCP Server to Onyx

Step-by-step guide to connecting the DataGalaxy MCP Server to Onyx AI as an Action, with API key authentication.

2 min read

Onyx AI acts as an MCP client: it discovers and runs actions from your MCP server. Once the DataGalaxy Model Context Protocol (MCP) server is connected, DataGalaxy tools appear as Onyx Actions that users can enable in chat.

Your Onyx agents can then search your data catalog, fetch metadata, and use DataGalaxy tools directly in conversations. The DataGalaxy MCP server exposes read-only access to your DataGalaxy platform: search, get objects, links, users, tags, and more.

What you need before you start

  • An Onyx AI instance where you have Admin access.
  • A DataGalaxy instance with MCP enabled.

Open the Actions dashboard

  1. In Onyx, click your user profile icon.
  1. Select Admin Panel.
  1. In the sidebar, open the MCP Actions tab. You'll see existing actions and the option to add new ones.

Add the DataGalaxy MCP server

  1. Under Add MCP Server, add a server name.
  1. Add the MCP Server URL: you can find it in your DataGalaxy instance.

  1. Press the Add Server button. The next tab, Authenticate MCP, appears.

  1. The default header value matches the format we need. Add your Bearer Token to the API Key field and press Connect. You can find your token under your DataGalaxy profile.
